Before we take a tooth out
Extraction is the last resort, not the quick answer. Where a tooth can be saved with a root canal and a crown, we will show you the X-ray and explain both paths honestly, including what each costs and how long each is likely to last.
If it does have to come out, the more important question is what replaces it. A gap left indefinitely lets the neighbouring teeth drift and the opposing tooth over-erupt, which makes any future implant or bridge harder. We would rather have that conversation on the day than two years later.
On the day and afterwards
The tooth is removed under local anaesthetic. If you are anxious, sedation is available at our Perth and Albany clinics.
Afterwards, bite on the gauze, avoid rinsing vigorously for twenty-four hours, skip smoking and straws, and stick to soft food for a day or two. We will give you written instructions and a number to call if anything is not settling.
Common questions
How many teeth can be extracted at once?
It depends on their position, your medical history and your comfort. Several teeth in the same quadrant are routine. Full clearances are done too, often under sedation.
Do dentists remove painful teeth straight away?
If there is an acute infection, we may need to settle it first, because anaesthetic works poorly in badly infected tissue. We will always deal with the pain at that first appointment, one way or another.
