Catching decay early
Decay does not hurt until it reaches the nerve, which is why a check-up and bitewing X-rays matter: they find the cavity while it is still a filling rather than a root canal.
Our new patient offer of a check-up, clean and two bitewing X-rays for $275 exists for exactly this reason. It is the cheapest appointment we do and it prevents the most expensive ones.
Replacing old fillings
Old amalgam fillings eventually leak at the margins and decay restarts underneath, out of sight. If a filling is chipping, catching floss or darkening at the edges, it is worth having a look at it before the tooth cracks around it.
