In-chair versus take-home
In-chair whitening with Philips Zoom takes about 90 minutes and gives you the full result the same day. It is the right choice if you have an event coming up or you would simply rather have it done.
Take-home whitening uses trays moulded to your teeth and a lower-concentration gel you wear over a couple of weeks. It reaches a similar end point more gradually, tends to cause less sensitivity, and the trays can be topped up years later.
Plenty of patients do both: an in-chair session to make the jump, then trays to hold it.
Before you whiten
Whitening only works on natural tooth structure. Crowns, veneers and white fillings do not change shade, so if you have restorations on your front teeth we will plan the order of treatment to avoid a mismatch.
We also check for decay and gum problems first. Whitening an unhealthy mouth is uncomfortable and the result does not hold.

Common questions
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some sensitivity for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles on its own. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell us and we will adjust the protocol or steer you toward take-home trays.
How long does whitening last?
Typically one to three years, depending on how much coffee, tea, red wine and smoking is involved. Trays make topping up straightforward.
