Wisdom Teeth Removal
Do they need to come out?
Not always. A wisdom tooth that has come through straight, that you can clean, and that is not causing pain or decay can often be left alone and monitored.
They need removing when they are impacted against the tooth in front, when the gum flap over them keeps getting infected, when decay has started in either the wisdom tooth or its neighbour, or when a cyst has formed around an unerupted tooth.
The assessment
A CBCT scan shows exactly where each root sits relative to the nerve in the lower jaw and the sinus above the upper teeth. That is what determines how straightforward the removal is, and whether it should be done in the chair or referred.

Common questions
How long is the recovery?
Most people take two to three days off the worst of it, with swelling peaking around day two and settling over the following week. A straightforward upper wisdom tooth is often much quicker than a lower impacted one.
Can I be asleep for it?
Yes. We offer happy gas, oral sedation and IV sedation depending on the clinic and your medical history.
