Both systems use brackets bonded to your teeth and a wire that applies force. The bracket material is the only real difference, and it changes three things: how visible the braces are, how robust they are, and the price.
Metal brackets
Stainless steel brackets are small, strong and handle the full range of tooth movement without complaint. They are the most economical option, typically $3,000 to $4,000 per set, and they are easy to clean around, which matters if your teeth build up plaque quickly.
Clear brackets
Ceramic brackets are tooth-coloured and far less obvious in photographs and across a meeting table. They cost a little more, they are slightly more fragile, and the elastic ties can pick up stain from coffee, tea and curry between adjustment visits.
Where aligners fit in
If appearance is your main concern, aligners are more discreet than either. They also suit mild to moderate cases better than severe ones. Fixed braces still handle serious rotations and bite corrections more reliably, and they do not depend on you remembering to wear them.
