Sleep Dentistry
The options
Nitrous oxide, or happy gas, is the mildest form. It is given through a small nasal mask and helps you feel relaxed while remaining fully conscious and able to respond. The effect wears off within minutes of the mask coming off, so you can drive yourself home.
Oral sedation is a tablet taken before the appointment. You stay awake but deeply relaxed, and most patients remember very little of the procedure. You will need someone to drive you.
IV sedation is administered by a qualified sedationist and takes you to the edge of sleep. It suits long surgical appointments and severe dental phobia. You will need an escort and the rest of the day off.
For children
At our Albany clinic we offer happy gas for children under 13 and IV sedation for patients aged 13 and over. The aim with children is always to build a tolerance for treatment rather than to sedate as a default.
